Athens the Greek Capital is a great place to start when visiting Greece. This modern bustling City has evolved somewhat since 3500bc leaving behind ancient monuments and architectural masterpieces for all to glare at. Many people visiting Athens will notice the large quantities of cars and noise associated with them, however there are slightly quieter retreats to explore such as the Plaka area where you will find pretty flowering gardens, small taverns and cobble stoned streets as well as a wide variety of restaurants. There are also spectacular mountainous views that surround parts of the city that can be explored offering a chance to inhale cleaner air and view the wide varieties of wildflowers.

Athens can get pretty hot in the summer months of June – September with temperatures averaging at 29C coupled with the smog and pollution can sometimes make the heat a little unbearable, however visiting in Spring can provide pleasant temperatures up to 19C.

Athens Flights

Flying to Athens couldn’t be easier with daily flights from the UK, USA and many European destinations. The majority of charter flights arrive at Ellinikon Airport and many of the UK Summer flights fly directly to some of the surrounding Islands, airways including Olympic Airways. There is an alternative to flying such as the train, where you can board at London travelling through to Paris and then taking the Ferry To Patras. Transport from the Airport is available either by taxi, which is fairly cheap and airport buses run every 20 minutes into the city.

Sightseeing

There are many fantastic landmarks to visit while in Athens including Omonia Square and Exarchia Square. The Acropolis which was built on a 328ft hill in the centre of town and The Parthenon which is an architectural masterpiece dating back to 432bc. The Aeropagus is an extremely popular landmark with visitors; this ruin is where the cities high council used to hold meetings for the democratic assembly. Museums are plentiful displaying Greek history and heritage. The Greek National Archaeological Museum displays some of the Athens most treasured possessions.
