Alexandria Holidays Egypt
Alexandria is one of Egypt’s most bustling and cosmopolitan cities. With a population of three million, Alexandria is a flourishing and interesting destination for those seeking a unique Egyptian experience. Known as Egypt’s second city, Alexandria is a significant Mediteranian port and stretches some ten miles along the coast.
There are many attractions to the city of Alexandria including the Naval Museum, the Necropolis of Anfushi, the Roman Amphitheatre, and to the east of Alexandria is the stunning beach strip.
The Naval Museum of Qaytbay’s Fortress is located on the north pier and is a 15th century Mameluke castle. The circular towers and battlements tower over the Eastern Harbour where you can get a magnificent view of the local fishing boats. This naval museum is home to a number of Roman and Napoleonic relics as well as model ships and examples of the uniforms worn at the time.
The Necropolis of Anfushi consist of five rock tombs which were designed with a mixture of Roman, Egyptian and Ptolemaic style. Being a fairly recent discovery, the Necropolis of Anfushi is a delight to visit.
The Roman Amphitheatre or Kom el -dikka was uncovered next to the Roman Baths which date from the 3rd century. The site here is still undergoing extensive excavation, but a visit here just to see the unusual mosaic floor and tiers of seats are well worth it.
Alexandria is not known for being a beach resort, but for those visiting Alexandria and looking for a relaxing day out, then there are a few pleasant beaches you could visit. The town beaches are still affected by pollution both industrial and urban, so are not worth looking at, although there are current clean up effort going on to try and improve the situation. For the best beaches in Alexandria you should look to stop at Montazah. Here you can find an amiable beach with clean sand. Or further east in Ma’mura you can find another beach which is just as enjoyable.
West of Alexandria is Cleopatra Beach. Here you can take a leisurely dip in one of the several natural rock pools near Mersa Matruh. This is rumoured to be a favourite bathing location of the last Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra.
Also located to the west of Alexandria is the Temple of Osiris. Again this is a fairly unvisited site in relation to the many landmarks which are found in Alexandria, but well worth a fleeting visit should you get the chance. This ancient temple can be climbed for an amazing view of the desert, calming coastline and the Lake Maryut. The Temple of Osiris sates back to the Hellenistic era and offers a different take on the ancient wonders to be seen in Egypt.
For an authentic and historical view of an Egyptian city, then look no further than the astounding Alexandria. The mixture of city culture with the many ancient artefacts of the city, make Alexandria a distinctive city which should be visited if given the opportunity.
