Cairo Egypt Holidays
When visiting the mystical and bustling city of Cairo you can take pleasure in the many highlights such as shopping, culture, nightlife and leisure activities. The unique blend of old and new that is found in Egypt’s capital city can be found no where else on earth.
The population of Cairo is an increasing 20 million and this is evident in the crowded streets and roads. For most people, their first visit to Cairo can be both surprising and daunting. Anyone who thinks the capital of Egypt is a desert oasis with roaming camels and Egyptian architecture is sadly mistaken. The city itself is a hive of activity and is a great place to visit for the nightlife. That being said, for those seeking the more traditional view of Egypt, then this can still be obtained by the organised tours from the capital Cairo. The main features to be seen are the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the Egyptian Antiquities Museum and the Pyramids of Saqqara.
The Great Pyramids if Giza simply have to be seen. For a long time the exact nature and theory behind the meaning and existence of these stunning pyramids have both intrigued and baffled even the most knowledgeable Egyptologist. Giza is situated 7 miles from the centre of Cairo. Located on arid land, these magical pyramids date back to the time of the Pharaohs and was commissioned during the 3rd dynasty by the Pharaoh Zoser. The architect Imhotep designed a monument which would last an eternity in this town of Giza.
The Sphinx was recently restored in 1998 and is an amazing sight to behold. The sculpture is built from a solid block of stone and has the body of a lion and the head of a god or godlike man , which is thought to be that of Chephren son of Cheops, who also commissioned the project. Standing an incredible 66ft high, this limestone rock feature is one of the most important highlights to be visited in Egypt.
The Egyptian Antiquities museum can be found north of Midan el-Tahir. The many excellent collections range from the relics dating back to the Old Kingdom to the Hellenistic Roman Era. All the treasures here are breathtaking and remarkably humbling. The tomb of Tutankhanun can be seen here and is a delight to witness. You can also see the mummies of Ramases II and a variety of other Pharaohs in the Mummy Room. To help navigate your way around this vast museum it might be worth investing in one of the guide books on offer.
There are a number of Pyramids which can be visited in Egypt. Perhaps one of the less visited of the lot is the Pyramids of Saqqara. Due to the remoteness of the location the Pyramids of Saqqara should not be overlooked. The unusual huddle of tombs and pyramids make this site a real unique treasure which should be seen if possible. There are not as many organised tours to this part, so make sure you get yourself booked into one as soon as possible.
