Cheap Ionian Island Holidays
The Ionian Islands are located down the western coast of Greece; standing in the southern Adriatic means that the Islands have a very Italian Influence when it comes to food, architecture and culture.
The islands have heavy rainfalls; this in turn promotes lush green hills and mountains with orange trees, olive trees and a variety of colourful plants and flowers.
The Ionian Islands consist of seven Islands these are Corfu, Ithaca, Kefalonia, kythira, Lefkada, Paxi and Zakinthos (Zante). All of the Islands have their own distinct individuality boasting several attractions.
Undoubtedly the more popular International Ionian Island destinations have to be Corfu and Zakinthos. Corfu is the largest Capital in the Ionian Islands with many visitors flocking to Corfu for its bustling nightlife, cosmopolitan atmosphere and architectural masterpieces. British visitors in particular love the island so much that Corfu is renowned for the amount of Brits who permanently reside on the Island.
The climate on the Ionian Islands is still very Mediterranean despite the rainfalls with temperatures can become very hot in the summer months of June – September with the winter months having more rainfall.
The scorching temperatures attract thousands every year to its beaches and emerald seas in particular Corfu and Zathinthos mainly due to the towns being more like resorts, where the needs of holiday makers are catered for with a wide variety of bars, international restaurants, fast food outlets, shops and discos.
Kefalonia the largest Ionian Island is a beautiful to explore and somewhat quieter than its neighbouring Islands. The island boasts pretty cottages and gardens with an explosion of colourful flowers, sandy beaches, fantastic caves and an attractive port of Sami.
The vineyards of kefalonia are worth a visit; you can sample some of the local produce in the restaurants and bars and sightseeing in the towns of Argostoli, which is Kefalonias main town that was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1953 is now almost fully restored. Within the town you will find many points of interest including the Historical and Cultural Museum and Argostolis beach resort. The town of Fiskardo is a pretty fishing town and a major tourist attraction hence so many hotels and restaurants scattered around.
Fiskardo was lucky enough to escape the earthquake, preserving some of the 18th century houses in the town, giving visitors to the Island a great insight into how things used to look before the earthquake.
The Small Island of paxos is a popular holiday retreat; many tour operators offer package deals to these scenic Islands with its dramatic cliffs, rolling hills and olive tree regions. The islands points of interest include the Venetian Fortress - Kastro Agious Nikolaos, which was built in 1423, and the church of Ipapanti and Grammatikou Venetian Mansion that displays a magnificent tower.
