New York City also referred to, as “The Big Apple” is a city full of excitement, culture and contrasts. When visiting the city, the first thing you notice is the many skyscrapers the light up the nights skyline.
The heart of the city is Manhattan with the four other boroughs offering some worthwhile sights and visitor attractions in Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx and Staten Island.
New York is the largest city in the United States located in the southern part of New York State, at the mouth of the Hudson River (also known as North River as it passes Manhattan Island) The Cities outer boroughs all offer some nice attractions. The main area to visit is Manhattan, here you will find some of New York’s famous landmarks including the Empire State building, Times Square, Madison Square Garden that is home to the New York Knickerbockers (the Knocks) basketball team and the New York Rangers ice hockey team, the Garden is also host some great entertainment with over 600 events performed every year, everything from rock concerts, championship tennis, dog shows and boxing matches, Rockefeller Centre, fifth avenue where all the major department stores can be found including Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and some exclusive and budget shops. There are also many restaurants and fast food outlets scattered along this shopping area for a quick bite to eat on the run. Central Park is another major attraction, situated in lower Manhattan, Central Park provides entertainment such as ice-skating and live entertainment, but its main purpose is to provide a nice relaxing place to escape the hustle and bustle of cars and people. The 843-acre haven of grass and trees also houses a Wildlife Conservation Centre with over 100 species of animals from three different climate zones: the Tropics, the Polar Circle, and the California Coast. The Ramble is a section of the park with over 250 species of birds because of its strategic location on the Atlantic Migratory path.
A visit to New York wouldn’t be complete without a trip out to the Statue of Liberty, the New York Harbour Cruise offers a full commentary boat cruise around some of the Cities major attractions including Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.
New York is without a doubt one of the most vibrant cosmopolitan Cities in the world with its hundreds of restaurants, exclusive bars and clubs and shopping like nowhere else. New York is a thriving, interesting, cosmopolitan place that offers something for every independent traveller, whether your trip is a long or short one there is plenty charm and charisma about the place that will see you coming back for more.
