New York Accomodation - Hotels and Hostels

Budget accommodation in New York City and certainly in Manhattan can be sometimes hard to find. It is normally advisable to consider hostels for those looking to see the main sights, but who happen to have a limited budget. That being said, there are a very small number of hotels which offer cheaper rooms, and are located not too far from the major attractions.

Hotel Seventeen is one such hotel which offers very reasonable rates particularly out of tourist season. The weekly rates are especially attractive and can cut the cost of your stay by quite a bit.
Located on East 17th Street between 2nd and 3rd avenue and in the middle of a quiet (by New York standards) tree lined street, this hotel is ideally located near the East Village and Union Square.
Having recently undergone some much needed renovation, Hotel Seventeen still has what can be classed as traditional New York style rooms. With high ceilings and choice furniture, this hotel has even been used in one of Woody Allen’s movies, Manhattan Murder Mystery thanks to its unique style.
The rooms are very simple, yet clean and spacious. There is no restaurant in the hotel, but with the great location, you can even grab a lobster dinner on the corner for next to nothing.
For the ultimate Manhattan experience, start the day early, leave your distinctive Hotel Seventeen, grab a fresh cup of coffee and a muffin and head for a bench at Union Square. Watch as the city begins to stir around you as the pigeons peck the pavement, the squirrels pester you for a scrap of muffin, and take the time to plan your days adventure.
Prices at Hotel Seventeen vary from each season, but you can expect to pay around £60 per night.

Hostels in New York are generally large, clean and situated in the most popular parts of Manhattan. From the fashionable Chelsea to Central Park, you are never too far from the cities attractions.

Chelsea International Hostel is located on West 20th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue and is in the heart of the Chelsea district. A bed here can cost you around £15 per night with up to six people sharing a dorm. There are some private rooms available and can set you back £40. There is a compulsory $10 depsit which has to be left for a key, but other than that, this can be a very affordable and smart place to stay. With very easy access to Greenwich Village and Penn station, this can be perfect for those wanting to explore the city.

Another popular hostel is Jazz on the Park. Situated at Central Park West, the location doesn’t get much better when you take into account the great prices here. Rooms can sleep anything from 2 to 14 people and can cost anything from £15 to £50 per night. One of the key features of this hostel is the Java Joint Café which serves refreshments all day at very reasonable rates.
